The lower Omo Valley near the borders of Kenya and Sudan, is home to some of the most fascinating tribes on the continent of Africa and around the world. This land frozen in time is inhabited by different ethnic groups with ancient traditions that have remained untouched for centuries.
I spent 8 days living with local African tribes like the Hamer, Mursi, Dorse, Karo, ... in very remote areas in southern Ethiopia.
The lower Omo Valley near the borders of Kenya and Sudan, is home to some of the most fascinating tribes on the continent of Africa and around the world. This land frozen in time is inhabited by different ethnic groups with ancient traditions that have remained untouched for centuries.
This trip was not really a filmmaking trip. I visited more to explore, discover, inspire myself and trying to understand how these tribes live. Unfortunately most tourist go there and make it like a human safari. They visit the tribes, take a picture of them, give them some money, jump back into their 4wd and go to the next village... I tried to make it more meaningful though by sleeping with them & trying to interact with them (off course I had a guide with me who could bridge the gap of communication).
All the shots you see are more or less 80% of all the shots I've taken from the tribes. Photography and especially filmmaking can be quit stressful in the villages. Therefore I plan to go back next year aiming for a bigger production. I can conclude that I feel really privileged that I was able to experience all of this.
Ethiopia is a wonderful country with incredible hospitable people.
