Explore the Wonders of Iceland

November 26, 2024

If travelers wish to immerse themselves in an island adventure with awe-inspiring landscapes, a trip to Iceland is a good match. This journey is designed for any type of traveler, as the only fitness level required is that of a walker (easy to moderate). Iceland brings scenic drives, light hikes, and a host of optional activities. The traveler begins in Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland, where one can stroll through charming streets, visit local galleries, and savor the city’s renowned culinary scene. The traveler can also venture into the Golden Circle, a route that showcases some of Iceland’s most celebrated natural wonders. At Pingvellir National Park, travelers can even witness the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Experiencing the power of Gullfoss is another benefit to taking this trip–it is the name of a majestic waterfall that cascades into a rugged canyon, and receives raving reviews from travelers. There are also plenty of erupting geysers: one is Strokkur, in proximity to the capital city, and the largest geyser in all of Iceland. Additionally, there is another called Geysir, which is the most well-known in Iceland, and the name that inspired what would become the name of all other ‘geysers’-- hot springs of water that at times send shoots of water into the air. Ranging in width from a column to a wall, the water must reach boiling temperature from its dormant base temperature to erupt. The journey continues into the South Coast, where the traveler will encounter the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, the towering cliffs of Dyrholaey, and the stunning Fjadargliufur canyon. Additionally included on this adventure is Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier, and the surreal beauty of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs can be found drifting serenely in glacial lakes. For optional activities, the traveler can go exploring in ice caves or hike on and around glaciers. This journey is perfect for those seeking a comprehensive Icelandic experience, touching all the great landmarks and sights on the island.

Tour Sweden’s Islands by Kayak

October 29, 2024

This trip offers a rare chance to explore a pristine, island-dotted seascape by kayak–ideal for travelers seeking both adventure and deep calm. The tour typically covers 6–12 miles of paddling per day, making it suitable for moderately fit individuals with a sense of curiosity and a love of the outdoors–no prior kayaking experience needed. Days are spent gliding between uninhabited skerries (small islands consisting of rock), swimming in clear Baltic waters, foraging, and enjoying fresh meals prepared over open fires, while nights are spent wild camping on remote islets under extended Nordic twilight. Travelers bring only compact, waterproof duffels or dry bags (no hard luggage) to fit inside the kayaks, embracing a minimalist, self-supported adventure. What makes this trip unique is the combination of untouched wilderness, Sweden’s “Everyman’s Right” (a custom historic law stating that anyone can venture into natural landscapes without penalty), to roam and camp freely, and with rare access to otherwise unreachable spots teeming with seabirds, seals, and quiet beauty. Ideal for solo adventurers, couples, or small groups, this journey appeals to those looking to unplug from modern life and reconnect with nature–without sacrificing the thrill of movement, the warmth of shared meals, or the magic or a world far from roads and crowds.

This trip is led by Follow Alice–an adventure travel company known for its ethical, community-centered approach to tourism. Founded in 2014 after cofounder, Reto, climbed Kilimanjaro with local Tanzanian guide Chris, Follow Alice was born out of a shared passion for exploration and cultural connection. Volunteer to Help Conserve Croatia’s Bears

February 1, 2024

Croatia, the land of a thousand islands, has within its borders eleven nature parks, eight national parks and two nature reserves. The country is home to ten UNESCO World Heritage sites, remarkable considering its relatively small size. Approximately 900 brown bears, the largest European carnivores, live in Croatia, although the exact number is unknown. The bear population in the country has been growing since the 1950s and has a favorable conservation status. Volunteers have a chance to help protect bear populations and conserve nature. They can join a bear sanctuary and help preserve the environment and assist in a place for bears who have suffered maltreatment and abandonment. Volunteers will live in a traditional Croatian village amid nature, where they will become part of the local community. Tasks include (but are not limited to) maintaining the forest and surrounding environment, ensuring the well-being of all animals at the center, and supporting the visitor center’s needs. Volunteers can learn the Croatian language and immerse themselves in the culture while making a difference in the community.

This is a minimum four-week and maximum 12-week trip offered by International Volunteer HQ. All IVHQ volunteer programs include airport pickup and accommodation, program orientation, and 24-hour IVHQ staff support. This project costs $1,955 for four weeks and $5,075 for 12 weeks.

Help Children with Disabilities in Transylvania

April 11, 2019

Romania is a country in southeastern Europe known for its heavily forested region of Transylvania. Ringed by the Carpathian Mountains, it harbors well-preserved medieval towns with many fortified churches and castles—specifically the Bran Castle, which has long been associated with the legend of Dracula. Romania spent decades under the communist rule of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and continues to restore its rich heritage after his government’s collapse in 1989. The “Volunteering in Transylvania, Romania” trip is located in Brasov, a city in the heart of Romania’s Transylvania region. The volunteer work is locally organized and consists of helping children and adults who have special needs, such as autism or Down syndrome. The Romanian state generally fails to integrate these children into mainstream schooling. Therefore, this work is vital in developing their potential and in preparing them for the future. The volunteer work includes improving and refurbishing two of Brasov’s day therapy centers and also includes a variety of interactive opportunities with the recipients. This two-week trip costs $1,567.

Take the Trans-Siberian Railway with Fellow Travelers

January 17, 2019

Journey across the vast and mysterious landscapes of Russia on one of the world’s most iconic train routes: the Trans-Siberian Railway. This unforgettable womens-only adventure takes the traveler from the heart of Moscow, with its iconic Red Square and onion-dome cathedrals, across the vast Siberian landscape to the serene shores of Lake Baikal–the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake. Moderate activity levels are present in this trip, so average fitness will suffice for participants. Going by train, the traveler will witness the incredible diversity of Russian geography, from dense forests and rolling hills to remote villages as well as open steppe (flat, sprawling landmarks of grassland, found in temperate regions, lacking trees or shrubs). Along the way, travelers will step off the train to explore fascinating cities such as Yekaterinburg, the site where the last Tsar of Russia lived, and Irkutsk, containing advanced wooden architecture as well as being the urban outpost closest to Lake Baikal. They will also visit historic landmarks and meet inspiring local women who will share their stories and traditions. This journey is more than a sightseeing trip–it is a cultural immersion and a chance to connect deeply with fellow travelers. Between enjoying hearty Russian meals, attending local performances, and even trying a hand at crafts or traditional cooking, this trip is designed for women seeking both true adventure and connection. This trip blends the excitement of discovery with the comfort and camaraderie of traveling in a supportive group.

Hike the Portuguese Way on the Camino

January 17, 2019

Embark on a transformative journey with AdventureWomen as the traveler hikes the final 71.5 miles of the Portuguese Way on Spain’s famed Camino de Santiago. This women-only adventure begins in the historic town of Tui and leads the traveler through rolling Galician countryside, charming medieval villages, and vibrant towns such as Pontevedra and Padron. Pontevedra, brimming with old-town vibes, sustainable lifestyles, and extremely high walkability, is also home to the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin, uniquely shaped like a seashell. Padron, known for its scenic riverside location, is native to Padron peppers, small edible green peppers that are mostly mild, but occasionally give the recipient’s tongue a spicy palette. Legend also has it that the city is connected to St. James, as the body of James was brought by boat from Jerusalem. Along the way, explore ancient roads, centuries-old churches, and local traditions while enjoying regional cuisines and the camaraderie of fellow travelers. Designed for active women, this trip requires good physical fitness, with daily hikes of 10-15 miles over varied terrain including forest paths and cobbled streets. The traveler’s luggage is transferred each day, so the full experience of the trail can be felt with just a daypack. Stay in welcoming country inns and guesthouses that offer comfort and authentic Galician hospitality. Highlights include soaking in the thermal waters of Caldas de Reis, sampling fresh seafood and Albarino wine, and earning your official Compostela certificate upon arrival in Santiago de Compostela. The certificate, or “pilgrim passport,” written all in Latin, is obtained once the traveler walks the distance to Santiago and collects stamps for it–at least two a day, and then at the end, once presented to the Pilgrim’s Office, the certificate is obtained. With expert local guides, cultural immersion, and AdventureWomen’s signature spirit of connection and empowerment, this journey is more than a hike–it’s a meaningful pilgrimage of discovery, both outward and inward. Step into history, friendship, and personal growth on the Camino de Santiago.

Help Break the Cycle of Poverty in Romania

August 6, 2015

Known for its historic folklore, rich history, and beautiful countryside, Romania is still recovering from an oppressive government and adjusting to its recent admission to the European Union. There are still many in the population below the poverty line and high rates of illiteracy. This volunteer project focuses on support for adults on the autism spectrum. These individuals face disadvantages which can be mollified with proper resources, which volunteers on this trip will support. This support will involve renovation and additions to a Center for Autistic Young Persons, where those on the spectrum can get the support they need. Situated in Brasov in Transylvania, home of the legendary Dracula, this trip allows travelers to give back while experiencing this beautiful country. In their free time, travelers can visit the famous Black church, the old city in Brasov, and Bran’s castle, known as Dracula’s castle.

This trip is 8 days and costs  $1,862. Globe Aware is a nonprofit organization that offers international volunteer programs that go beyond tourism. Globe Aware programs promote the immersion of participants in a unique way that also aligns with the United Nations sustainability goals. Volunteers get the chance to experience cultural awareness: acknowledging and celebrating the culture of a community, but not changing it. Participants will also work alongside the host community and help teach and learn skills with the concept of promoting sustainable practices.
