Mount Meru, located in Northeastern Tanzania, is an active volcano, although its last minor eruption occurred in 1910. Millions of years ago, a significant volcanic eruption blew the top off, giving it its iconic horseshoe shape. The mountain is sometimes confused with Meru Peak in the Himalayas. Ascending Mt. Meru, travelers will begin trekking through the rainforest, searching for wildlife along the way. In the mornings along the route, they can witness the sunrise rising behind Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance, and trek through the moorlands and unique volcanic landscapes. Travelers will also have the opportunity to hike Little Meru, a lower peak with viewpoints to acclimate to the altitude on their journey. Summiting the mountain, travelers will reach Socialist Peak to enjoy views and the surrounding landscape. Highlights on the descent from the summit include visiting waterfalls along the Tululusia River and the Fig Tree Arch, a pathway through a large tree that participants can walk under. Travelers should expect to be in good physical condition to hike for many hours a day.
