VIDEO: Columbian Beekeeper Fights to Preserve a Dying Species

March 25, 2021

Bees perform around 80% of the earth’s pollination, specifically in regards to cultivated crops. Pollination is essential to food production, but it is often taken for granted as bees have been pollinating since before the agricultural revolution. However, due to climate change and pollution, much of the bee population has decreased, and some species are considered endangered.

Yet many people all over the world are dedicated to ensuring that bees do not die out. One of these individuals is Ramón Galvis Rodríguez, a beekeeper from San Mateo, Colombia. Rodríguez has dedicated his life to beekeeping, being a 15-year member of the Boyaca Beekeepers’ Association, and laments the damage caused by humans to the environment. This video explores his daily life while he discusses the fate of bees; and how, even though it’s demanding, the connection to nature he has from beekeeping will ensure he does it forever.
