Explore the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia and Somaliland

June 19, 2020

Exploring the otherworldly landscapes of Djibouti and the ancient rock caves and culture of Somaliland, this Horn of Africa trip immerses travelers in the region's history and natural wonders. In Djibouti, travelers will explore the city with a local guide before visiting Lake Abbe, a dried salt lake surrounded by limestone chimneys and ancient ruins. Travelers will camp along the lake and visit the crater of Lac Assal, the lowest point in Africa, and the lake with the world's highest salinity. In Somaliland, travelers will explore the capital, Hargeisa, and experience the livestock markets where local vendors sell camels and goats. They will also visit the central market, the cultural centre, and the MiG Jetfighter War Memorial, which commemorates the atrocities committed during the Civil War. In Las Geel, travelers will experience the famous rock art sites, featuring well-preserved paintings dating back as far as 9,000 B.C.E. While staying in Berbera, travelers will explore the city's historical quarters and witness daily life in the coastal town, swimming or strolling on the beaches. After returning to Hargeisa, participants will visit another famous rock art site and pass through semi-nomadic communities in desert towns, witnessing the local life in small rural villages. This trip will give travelers first-hand experiences of Somali culture and the turbulent history that has rocked this region.

While there has been instability in the past, Djibouti and Somaliland are both relatively peaceful nations today. Somaliland considers itself a separate nation from Somalia, while the international community and Somalia do not recognize it as such. However, it functions today as its own country, with its own government, laws, and borders. While safety concerns in Somalia remain high, Somaliland is more stable and secure. With local guides and secure transportation, travelers will be safe at all times.

This is a 9-day trip that costs $2750 led by Untamed Borders, an adventure travel company specialized in some of the world’s most interesting and inaccessible places. They run cultural tours as well as adventure sports including skiing, trekking, marathons and more. Whenever possible, proceeds from the trip are directed back to the communities visited and the trips are always led by local guides
