Despite its small size, Costa Rica is home to around 5% of the world’s known plant and animal species, creating some of the most beautiful landscapes. The nation is a global leader in renewable energy production, generating more than 99% of its electricity from renewable sources to protect this precious biodiversity. And while the nation is considered a natural paradise, many communities still live in poverty. In the Orosi Valley, outside of San Jose, lies the town of El Yaz. The community here continues to live in poverty without access to hot water, cars, and other amenities. During this trip, volunteers will help build a multi-use community center and support other local initiatives. The center is used to teach self-sustaining technical job skills, house refugees displaced by natural disasters, and serve as a space for arts and cultural activities. Alongside construction, volunteers will also provide support by teaching English, upgrading homes, and helping the town's elderly community. During their free time, volunteers can explore Costa Rica's natural landscapes in its national parks and participate in outdoor adventure activities.
This is a 7-day trip that costs $1,537 led by Globe Aware, a nonprofit organization that offers international volunteer programs that align with the United Nations sustainability goals. Volunteers gain cultural awareness and work alongside host communities.
