Volunteer in Peru with Indigenous Communities

November 8, 2018

The Maya civilization, which once flourished across Mesoamerica, including present day Guatemala, continues to have a significant presence in the country. Many Maya communities still inhabit the highlands and lowlands of the nation, maintaining their cultural traditions and way of life. These communities continue to practice traditional agricultural techniques, such as milpa (slash and burn agriculture), which has been passed down through generations. However, many indigenous communities in Guatemala face various challenges, including poverty, land conflicts, environmental degradation, and discrimination.

Peru is home to numerous indigenous groups, with the Quechua and Aymara being the two largest Andean indigenous ethnic groups. Each group has its own language, culture, and traditions. The Quechua language, spoken by millions of Peruvians, is one of the official languages of Peru. Andean indigenous peoples in Peru have a deep connection to their ancestral lands and maintain traditional practices such as agriculture, weaving, and pottery. However, indigenous communities in the nation face various challenges, including poverty, land issues, environmental degradation, and lack of necessities.

Volunteers can make a difference in both communities; they can live in small towns approximately 30 minutes to an hour from the Maximo Nivel institutes. These rural villages offer complete immersion into an overall, indigenous, traditional manner of life. Participants can live with an indigenous family- care for animals and livestock, help with agricultural work, weaving, create textiles, learn to prepare traditional meals, assist with renovation projects, and work with children at a local school. Work varies based on seasonal needs and weather conditions.

This Maximo Nivel volunteer program aims to give volunteers a life-changing experience while positively impacting local communities. All Maximo Nivel volunteer programs are supported by professional program managers, multilingual teams, and 24/7 in-country support. This project costs $685 for one week, $945 for two weeks, $1,125 for three weeks, and $1295 for four weeks. Airport transfers, breakfast and dinners, 3-4 hours per day practical work (Monday-Friday), letter of recommendation, emergency contact number, and accommodation are included.
