Guatemala, a country rich in Mayan history and a mega-diversity within the natural environment, has been growing exponentially in population and faces increased strain on the nation’s resources. Guatemalans are known for their warmth towards travelers, and welcomes visitors to explore all that the country has to offer. However, the beautiful temples, archeological sites, rich coffee culture, and volcanoes coexist with communities which are struggling to catch up with the infrastructure, educational, and other material needs of the rapidly expanding population. Volunteers on this trip will work to make up some part of that difference, whether that be aiding in the installation of cement floors, assisting in classrooms and local libraries, and providing support as needed to agricultural projects. In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to visit marvels like the ancient Mayan citadel Tikal, study butterflies at a local reserve, and enjoy a concert of Guatemalan flute music.
This trip is 7 days and costs $1,437. It is led by Globe Aware, a nonprofit organization that offers international volunteer programs that go beyond tourism. Globe Aware programs promote the immersion of participants in a unique way that also aligns with the United Nations sustainability goals. Volunteers get the chance to experience cultural awareness: acknowledging and celebrating the culture of a community, but not changing it. Participants will also work alongside the host community and help teach and learn skills with the concept of promoting sustainable practices.
