With a rich history as a thriving ancient empire, beautiful landscapes, natural resources, and status as a leader of democracy in Africa, Ghana is a bastion of stability and peace, known for its early aid helping other African nations gain independence. However, some of its rural areas are lacking in essential infrastructure and education resources. The outfitter works with Ghanaian grassroots organizations to find places where volunteers are needed most and places participants with a range of projects including water sanitation, facilities renovation, and education improvement. The town of Ho is the home base for volunteers; it is the capital of the Volta region, the ancestral home of the Ewe people, and a city close to some of Ghana’s most important landmarks. Volunteers will spend the bulk of their time in one of 45 nearby towns helping the needs of the community while also getting the chance to see some of what this beautiful country has to offer like the largest waterfall in West Africa, intricate Kente cloth production, and the dynamism of Ghanaian music.
This trip is 7 days and costs $1,537. It is led by Globe Aware, a nonprofit organization that offers international volunteer programs that go beyond tourism. Globe Aware programs promote the immersion of participants in a unique way that also aligns with the United Nations sustainability goals. Volunteers get the chance to experience cultural awareness: acknowledging and celebrating the culture of a community, but not changing it. Participants will also work alongside the host community and help teach and learn skills with the concept of promoting sustainable practices.
