A unique and beautiful composite of cultures, Vietnam carries French, Japanese, Chinese, and of course Vietnamese influences, particularly in the historic port town of Hoi An. The town’s river dried up, and the spice, silk, and porcelain trade dried up with it, but Hoi An retains a unique diversity of architecture and history which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This diversity, however, is the result of many wars and revolutions which have left the rural communities behind, not providing the support they need, for the lives they are living where they are. Volunteers will engage with these communities in the areas around Hoi An, building facilities like chicken coops, updating existing buildings, and supporting local schools. Local children have access to free kindergarten—which is not provided by the government—through the outfitter’s nonprofit work with the school. Along with the ability to give back, participants can explore this UNESCO site as well as Marble Mountain, the Champa ruins at My Son, or China Beach.
This trip is 7 days and costs $1,637. It is led by Globe Aware, a nonprofit organization that offers international volunteer programs that go beyond tourism. Globe Aware programs promote the immersion of participants in a unique way that also aligns with the United Nations sustainability goals. Volunteers get the chance to experience cultural awareness: acknowledging and celebrating the culture of a community, but not changing it. Participants will also work alongside the host community and help teach and learn skills with the concept of promoting sustainable practices.
