Quito, Ecuador, is known as the “Light of America” for its rich history, stunning architecture, and role as a center of culture and education in the region. It is one of the oldest cities in South America, and it was the first city in the world to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, despite Ecuador’s status as a developing country, there are still a large number of people from under-resourced communities. Specifically, around 25% of the nation’s population in 2022 was living below the poverty line. Volunteers can make a difference in the community. Tasks include (but are not limited to) maintaining school and/or community gardens, cleaning and renovating local school grounds, community centers, and playgrounds, administrative tasks as required (for example, organizing exam booklets), and assisting with school/lunch support programs. Volunteers will not only be adding value to the community, but also develop professionally by practicing their Spanish, developing their communication skills, immersing themselves in the Ecuadorian culture, and exploring Quito. As a volunteer, you will stay with a welcoming family in a homestay, giving you a genuine window into everyday Ecuadorian life.
