Nature and Parks

Nature is an integral part of Bali’s culture.

Bali’s natural wonders and beauties

1. Monkey Forest Ubud

Both a nature reserve and a temple, the Monkey Forest is best known as the home of over 1,000 macaques considered sacred by locals. Guests enjoy watching the monkeys interact, create mischief and just go about their day-to-day lives. Because this particular species is endangered, travelers are encouraged to visit the location to support local conservation efforts. Be careful of your valuables and shiny items (glasses, phones and necklaces), as the cheeky monkeys are known to steal things!

2. Uluwatu Surf and Suluban Beach

Renowned for its famous surf break, Uluwatu and the nearby Suluban Beach are a spectacle to behold. Visit and watch the surfers at sunset from the cliff above, or trek the stairs down to enjoy the sea cave and beautiful beach. The cliffside is full of local warungs or more upscale restaurants, allowing you to slow down, grab a drink and enjoy the scenery.

2. Tukad Cepung Waterfall

Although there are many gorgeous waterfalls in the area, Tukad Cepung is best known for its breathtaking display of sunbeams that shine through to the cave on the other side. Travelers can explore the cave itself as well, where the waterfall continues to flow deeper into the cavern. The waterfall is well hidden in the rocks, so it is recommended to take a guide when exploring unfamiliar territory.

3. Wanagiri Hidden Hill

Surrounded by the Twin Lakes (Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan), Wanagiri offers stunning views of the water with lush greenery to match. A result of millennia of volcanic eruptions, the rich soil encourages exotic plants to grow like nowhere else in the region.

4. Aling-Aling Waterfall

Recognized by locals as one of the best cliff-jumping spots in Bali, Aling-Aling Waterfall features a mix of terraces and pools that create the perfect jumping experience. For those hoping for a more subdued approach, sliding is also available on the lower levels. Even if you aren’t looking for adventure, this is a great spot to take pictures and relax in nature.

Getting away from the crowds:

1. Nungnung Waterfall

Surrounded by seemingly endless forest and rice fields, the cascading waters of the Nungnung waterfall are the true definition of a hidden gem. A short yet steep hike brings travelers directly to the mouth of the waterfall, more than 50 meters (164 feet) tall. The area is very secluded but has great natural lighting and beautiful natural surroundings.

2. Diamond Beach

Hidden among the vast coastline of Nusa Penida lies Diamond Beach and its infamous crystal blue waters that rise to meet ancient limestone rock formations. Nusa Penida, just a 30-minute ferry ride from Bali, offers unparalleled coastlines and rugged beauty. Search for secret coves around the shore, book a snorkeling tour or spend the day relaxing on the soft white sand present throughout the island. A true tropical paradise, Diamond Beach is the perfect spot for a private beach getaway.
